Tina Turner, the legendary rock and roll singer who
rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s, died on Wednesday at her home in Küsnacht,
Switzerland. She was 83.
Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush,
Tennessee, in 1939. She began her singing career in the early 1950s, performing
with Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm. The couple married in 1962 and went on
to have a successful career together, releasing a string of hit albums and
singles.
However, Turner's marriage to Ike was also marked by
violence and abuse. In 1976, she left Ike and began a solo career. She quickly
became one of the most successful female rock singers of all time, releasing
albums such as Private Dancer (1984) and Break Every Rule (1986).
Turner was known for her powerful vocals, her energetic live performances, and her flamboyant stage persona. She won eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
In 2009, Turner announced her retirement
from music. She continued to live in Switzerland with her husband, Erwin Bach.
